    Vocabulary: sight


    Eyes, and sight give a lot of vocabulary and have an important part in our daily conversation.

    1) The anatomy of the human eye:

    Eyebrows Fringes of hair above the eyes
    Eyelashes Hair on the edges of the eyes
    The upper eyelid= top lid
    The upper cover of the eyes
    The lower eyelid= bottom lid
    The lower cover of eyeballs
    The iris/ the eyeballs
    The coloured eyeballs
    The pupil The centre of the eyeball
    Sclera The white part of eyes
    Lacrimal glands They secrete tears

    2) Eyes, sight: basic vocabury:

    To be crossed-eyed

    To be one-eyed

    To be long-sighted

    To be short-sighted
    To be blind (visually impaired/challenged) To play blind man's buff

    3) What can my eyes do?

    To look at something To blink
    To cry=> tears A black eye

    4) The different ways to look:

    To look up To look up to= to respect, admire
    To look down Look down on= to despise
    To gape= stare in wonder To gaze= look steadily, intently
    To glance= look quickly, briefly To glare = to stare angrily
    To glimpse= look briefly

    To squint=

    Look with eyes partly closed

    To peep= through a small openingTo peer= make an effort to see clearly
    To stare= to look fixedly To look at a view = to admire a view

    5) More vocabulary...

    To shut an eye
    = to sleep
    The eye of a needle
    = the hole to thread a needle
    To lose your sight
    = to become blind, gradually
    A hook and eye
    = a clothes fastener
    To catch sight of
    = to see very briefly
    The eye of a tornado
    = the centre of a huge storm
    To see sights
    = to visit monuments
    A bull's eye
    = the centre of a target
    To keep an eye on = look after someone A red-eye flight *
    = a late night plane

    * A red-eye flight is any flight departing late at night and arriving early the next morning.( + the time difference!) The term red-eye comes from the fatigue symptom of having red eyes because of a lack of sleep.

    6) ... and a few expressions...

    A few idioms mention both people's eyes and sight!

    - He did it in the twinkling of an eye = To do something very quickly.

    - She was so pretty that all eyes were on her! = Everyone was looking at her...

    - You're the apple of my eye! =You're very dear, precious to me!

    - We have a bird's eye view! = A panoramic view, seen from far above.

    - An eye for an eye ! = Some sort of revenge or retribution...

    - Out of sight, out of mind! = Far from someone, you easily forget...

    That was a very long lesson, but quite an easy one, after all! You just have to learn a little... You must be ready for the test... Go for it! I'm sure you'll do very well !
