     Short adjectives

     1 syllable OR  2 syllables ending in -y

    old, small, fast, short, hot

    happy, easy, funny

     

    Superlative

    The + adjective + -est

    Examples:

    long, the longest

    deep, the deepest

     

    Warning!

    fat  (this adjective contains 1 syllable and ends in: consonant-vowel-consonant) > the fattest

    happy (this adjective ends in -y) > the happiest

     

     LONG adjectives

     2 syllables (NOT ending in -y)  +  all the other adjectives

    pleasant, modern

    beautiful, intelligent, expensive

     

    Superlative

    The + most + adjective

    Examples:

    interesting, the most interesting

     

     Warning!

    good, the best

    bad, the worst

    far, the farthest OR the furthest

     

     A few adjectives can accept both superlatives

    clever : the cleverest OR the most clever

    quiet: the quietest OR the most quiet
