    It's time to move north again from the fertile centre of Chile to the landscape of the Atacama Desert. Trapped between the high Andes and the offshore current, there are places in the Atacama where . This is what I imagine it must be like to drive across the . Before and after me there is silence. Nothing moves in this landscape day after day after day. But not far the surface there is plenty going on. At Del Tatio, in the mountains high above the desert, the earth's crust and geysers like factory chimneys. Well, contrary to appearances, this great jacuzzi of a landscape is set in a very, very cold part of the Andes. It's about, ooh, my wonderful gadget here says it's about -10 (C) and we are at metres which is, wait a minute, feet which is, I think, the highest I have ever been in my life.
