    Count Nouns - Proper Nouns


    1. Nouns are names of people, places and things
    • a student, Jung Eun
    • a country, Canada
    • a camera

    2. Count nouns are easy to count. They have a singular

       and plural form.

       Use a before singular count nouns that begin with a

       consonant sound.

       Be careful: Use an before an h that is silent. 

    • one photo, two photos, three photos
    • She's a photographer.
    • He's a teacher.
    • It's a hat.
    • It's an hour too early.

    3. Use an before singular count nouns that begin with a

        vowel sound.

       Be careful: Use a before a u that sound like yew.

    • She's an artist.
    • He's an engineer.
    • It's an umbrella.
    • This is a unit about nouns.

    4. To form the plural of most count nouns, add -s or -es.

        Do not put a or an before plural nouns.

        Some nouns have irregular plural endings.

        Some nouns are always plural.

    • one friend      three friends
    • one class       three classes
    • They are photos of friends.

    Not: They are a photos of a friends.

     

    • one man        two men
    • one tooth       two teeth
    • pants, clothes
    • My pants are blue.

     

    5. Do not put a or an before proper nouns.
    • Paris is in France
    Not : A Paris is in a France.
