    Other / (the) others ...

    1) ‘OTHER' :  = Indefinite adjective + noun (singular or plural) => like all adjectives, it remains in the singular.

    * 'Other' is used to refer to a person or a thing  which is different from the one already mentioned or known.

ex : I went home with Tom and Jim, but the other boys stayed at the party.

    * 'Other' also expresses the people remaining in a group : ('other + noun in the plural'). It can then be followed by ‘one'.

ex : Two of my kids went to school by bus, the others (the other ones) were driven there by their uncle.

    * When there are two elements, 'other' can represent the alternative, the second possibility.

ex : He put on his right shoe, and then the other one.

ex : They have two sons. One is a doctor, the other (one) is a lawyer.

    * Used as an adjective, with a number, 'other' precedes the number :

ex : I took ten photos : eight coloured ones, but the other two were black and white. ('the two others' was possible; then, 'others' is a pronoun.)

     2) THE OTHER(S) =  INDEFINITE PRONOUN  : (Replaces a noun and takes the characteristics of this noun.): it is preceded by a determiner. It takes the mark of the plural :

'the other one' = singularr       the others / the other ones = plural

ex : Some students were listening, others were talking and laughing !

ex : I've had Paul on the phone. Can you call the others, please?

ANOTHER : Indefinite adjectifve or pronoun , when it's used with an indefinite article, 'an + other' must be written in one word only = ANOTHER.

ex : Could you please give me another glass of water, please?

ex : Don't worry ! The problem will be solved one way or another.

    * EVERY OTHER DAY : Be careful whenever you use : 'every other...'. It may either mean 'all the others' OR it may also mean 'one out of two'.

ex : I can't imagine why you haven't got your book. Every other boy's got one  = (All the other boys.)
ex : Every other day of the week could mean, for example, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

    * ON THE ONE HAND, ON THE OTHER HAND ... : is an expression which is used when you are comparing two different facts or two opposite ways of thinking about a situation:

ex : On the one hand, I love her deeply, but on the other hand, I can' t bear our daily routine ! I'm going to snap...

THE SEVEN DWARFS                              SLEEPY (Dormeur)                          HAPPY (Joyeux)                                   DOPEY (Simplet)

SNEEZY  (Atchoum)               GRUMPY (Grincheux)                     DOC (Prof)                       BASHFUL (Timide)
