    Vocabulary: let's have breakfast

"A King's breakfast, a Prince's lunch and a beggar's dinner": such is supposed to be the ideal nutrition in our latitudes.
Yet, it's sure that eating habits have changed with time and with the evolution of the working week.
The big bowl of white coffee (milk and coffee) bread, butter and jam of our early years have been outdated and replaced by cereals and fruit with milk and orange juice.

We now have to make a difference between what is called  our "traditional" or so called "continental breakfast" and the more elaborate " first meals" of the day which are sometimes cooked.
For instance, in Thaïland, people eat fish and rice.... In Japan, fish and rice are often consumed. In Vietnam, Pho soup is eaten, and in India, they prefer "paratha" (a sort of pancake) with curry.
Less far from us, in Europe, in Turkey, Greece, people eat cheese, tomatoes, cucumber and tea. I
n Holland, waffles are moistened with stroop (a caramel syrup). In Sweden, people are partial to fish (herring) and in Norway, salmon is eaten in different and varied forms. In Germany, pork, sausages and potatoes are eaten with eggs ... Other people, especially at weekends, tend to sleep in, and combine the first two meals (BREAKFAST + LUNCH) into one alone, BRUNCH which will be varied and cooked...

    CEREALS AND MILK (+ FRUIT...)

Before leaving for school or work, kids and adults too, are now used to swallowing a bowl of cereals with milk hastily (Corn Flakes, Hoops, Frosties, Puffs, Pebbles, Boulders...) with some fruit juice (+ possibly a cup of coffee ) .

BOISSONS ( Hot or cold BEVERAGES)

Beverages have changed too. Varied fruit juices, some of which are exotic, have appeared and multiplied ( orange juice  of course, grapefruit, plum and cranberry juices, passion fruit, pine apple juice) give us the necessary portion of C vitamin which is necessary to a healthy life. The good old milk and coffee of our younger days has now acquired a reputation of being very bad for digestion and to create allergies. The world is changing... so is the food...

                 Muffins             Scones            Pancakes

Besides in the United Kingdom, cooked breakfasts are made all over the world.

I'm sure you're no longer hungry, now...   I only hope you won't have eaten too much to take the test...
