    Mrs Doubtfire

    Madame Doubtfire:

WANTED: cleaner who can also look after children.

Miranda got only four telephone calls in answer to her advertisement. This was surprising. All the women who called had strangely low voices...

Daniel and Miranda Hilliard are at war. Daniel loves his children.  He wants to see them more often. The trouble is, Miranda, their mother, wants him to see them less. Miranda has the house. Miranda has the children. There is nothing he can do. But then Miranda needs a cleaning woman...

Anne Fine was born in Leicester, England, one of five girls. After leaving university, she became a teacher and got married.  She wrote her first book after her first child was born. The book came out in 1978. She and her husband lived in Scotland, Canada and California. When she returned to England, she met and married her second husband. Like her, he had two children, so now she is a mother of four. She has written about twenty-five books, mostly for young readers. Her children books have proved very popular. Some of them are about children whose parents are divorced. Others are about problems which children have at school. The children in her stories are often brave. They understand their problems quite clearly. Sometimes they are wiser than the older people in their family.

Madame Doubtfire came out in 1987. There is now a successful film of the story called Mrs Doubtfire, made in 1993. Robin William plays the part of Mrs Doubtfire.
