Passive Verbs
Passive form
Subject + to be + Past Participle
Example: A letter was written
When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:
- the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
- the form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
- the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)
Tense | Object | A form to 'Be' | Past Participle |
Simple Present Passive | The door(s) | is (are) | closed |
Simple Past Passive | Jurassic Park (s) | was (were) | directed by Steven Spielberg |
Future Passive | An English Book | will be | given to passing student |
Present Perfect Passive | The room (s) | has been ( have been ) | cleaned |
Past Perfect Passive | The windows | had been | broken. |
