Question Tags

Question tags are short questions added at the end of a sentence. They are used to ask for confirmation or to check that something is true.

How do we form question tags?

1. An affirmative sentence → a negative question tag

Affirmative sentence + negative tag

Examples:

- You are English, **aren't you?**
- She can swim, **can't she?**
- They live in London, **don't they?**
- Tom has finished his homework, **hasn't he?**

2. A negative sentence → an affirmative question tag

Negative sentence + affirmative tag

Examples:

- You aren't tired, **are you?**
- He doesn't like coffee, **does he?**
- They can't come today, **can they?**

Always use the same auxiliary (helping verb) as in the sentence.

Examples:

- She is happy, **isn't she?**
- They went home, **didn't they?**
- You will help me, **won't you?**
- He should study more, **shouldn't he?**

Remember!

If there is no auxiliary in the sentence, use do, does, or did.

Examples:

- You like music, **don't you?**
- She plays tennis, **doesn't she?**
- They arrived early, **didn't they?**

Special case

With "I am", the question tag is:

- I'm late, **aren't I?**

Summary

✔ An affirmative sentence takes a **negative** question tag.

✔ A negative sentence takes an **affirmative** question tag.

✔ Use the **same auxiliary** as in the sentence.

✔ Replace the subject with the correct **subject pronoun** (I, you, he, she, it, we, or they).
