Sir Walter Raleigh. By Kple Guillaume

Sir Walter Raleigh was born in 1554 in Devonshire. He made his studies in Oxford and later in London.

He was a well-known adventurer and sailor .

    .

    His trips around the world

He fought for his fellow protestants in France (The Hugenots) because  protestants were not allowed to practise their religion.

In 1578 ,he went to Roanoke Island (off the coast of what is today North Carolina in North America) and tried to establish a British colony,it was a failure.

in 1580 he   went to Ireland to stop a rebellion which attracted the attention of the court. When he came back Queen Elizabeth I  knighted him.

    In 1595; he explored  Guyana.

The last expedition in Orinoco River  was a failure again.

Although he set out on many expeditions, he didn't manage to colonize many countries.

However, he was the man who brought back tobacco and potatoes from his expeditions and made them popular in England .

Raleigh's relationships with the Queen and James the first

He was the favourite courtier of  Queen Elizabeth I because he was ambitious and courageous. She gave him many lands for the expedition in Ireland besides knighting him.

However,  Sir Walter  secretly married Queen Elizabeth 's maid. The Queen became angry and jealous.Raleigh and his wife were emprisoned.

Raleigh later went to prison for 13 years because James the first (Elizabeth's successor) accused him of  a conspiracy against the crown. He was sentenced to death, but his sentence was eventually suspended and he was released from the Tower of London.

After  that , he tried to search for the legendary  El-Dorado in South America and failed again.

In 1616, he set out on an expedition to the Orinoco river, from which he claimed he  would bring back gold. During this expedition, Raleigh's men fought with Spanish people. After another failure and for diplomatic reasons, Raleigh was executed in 1618.

People say his ghost appears on St Michael's  Eve .
