    Passive form : two complements

    • La Forme Passive des verbes à double 'objets'.
    • Passive forms of verbs with two 'objects'.
    • Certains verbes ( give, offer, tell, show ) peuvent apparaître avec 2 objets : un objet direct et un objet indirect.
    • Ex : We offer Mary a big box of chocolates.
    • Some verbs such as give, offer, tell and show can occur with two objects, both a direct object and an indirect object.
    • The children gave Mrs Paterson a lovely birthday card.
    • Dans ces cas il est possible de faire 2 formes passives : Il s'agit de savoir si l'on veut attirer l'attention sur l'objet direct de la phrase active ( 'a big box of chocolates') ou bien sur l'objet indirect ('Mary')
    • In these cases it is possible to make two passive sentences, depending on whether we want to focus on the direct object of the active sentence ('a lovely birthday card') or the indirect object ('Mrs Paterson').
    • A big box of chocolates was given to Mary.
    • Mary was given a big box of chocolates.
    • A lovely birthday card was given to Mrs Paterson (by the children).
    • Mrs Paterson was given a lovely birthday card (by the children).
    • Test : Reprendre la phrase à partir du mot donné en la mettant à la forme passive - Ne pas mentionner 'l'agent'.
