    Modaux : Se familiariser avec les valeurs des modaux.

    - Why can't I beat him ? / I may - ou might -  never win ! / He should be happy. / I really must lose weight !

    Se familiariser avec les valeurs des modaux

    Méthode :

    Le système des divers modaux anglais recouvre des valeurs souvent exprimées en français, avec les verbes 'devoir' ou 'pouvoir' mais aussi avec 'falloir' ou le futur. Pour une bonne compréhension - et une bonne expression - on doit s'attacher à l'idée plutôt qu'au mot. Il faut s'entraîner à reconnaître les valeurs.

    • Un même modal peut avoir des valeurs différentes selon le type de modalité;

    Ex :

    • May = pouvoir, au sens de permission.
    • May = pouvoir, au sens de probabilité => 'Il se peut que'..., le futur et peut-être...
    • You may come with us ( = tu peux/ tu as la permission de / venir avec nous ).
    •  He may come ( = Il se peut qu'il vienne / il viendra peut-être ).

    • Les valeurs peuvent être désignées ainsi :
    • Possibilité / impossibilité
    • Eventualité
    • Prévisibilité
    • Obligation
    • Test : donner une valeur au modal présent dans chaque phrase. Faire un choix dans la liste proposée.
