    King Uther's death

Merlin the Magician took the newborn son and went away, but Queen Igrayne did not accept the idea. In fact she had a difficult time; she spent all day and all night crying and screaming until she went mad. One day she went to the castle’s western wall and threw herself into the sea.

After some time, King Uther prepared himself to return  to his castle in Winchester, and he took Morgana the little daughter of King Gorlois and Queen Igrayne with him. On his way back to his castle he found a nunnery in a small town called Glastonbury. It was a big tall nunnery; only holy women lived there. King Uther ordered the little girl to stay with those nuns  forever, and then he continued on his way until he reached Winchester.

For some time, there were no wars, no battles, and people found peace at last. But King Uther had many enemies; one of them was living on the northern side of Britain. One day he sent a new servant to work in the King’s kitchen and he ordered her to put poison into Uther’s wine. When King Uther drank the cup of wine he immediately fell dead on the table.

It was a hard time in the south; for a long time there was no king to rule the country, people were suffering, the number of murderers and outlaws increased, and it was really a time of disorder. One night Merlin the magician came secretly to visit Winchester. He went directly to the cathedral to meet the archbishop.  There he asked the archbishop to gather all the people on the following Sunday. He also informed him that he should call together all the knights of the whole town.

On Sunday morning,  the people and the  knights of Winchester came to the cathedral to meet the archbishop, and while they were there they heard a sound coming from  outside. Everybody hurried outside the cathedral, and they saw a big stone with a bright metal sword standing in it. When the archbishop came closer, he saw that golden words were written on the stone:  “The man who pulls this sword from the stone is the true king of all Britain”.
