Logres became the empire of peace and honour. People admired and respected both the king and the queen, because they ruled wisely and well. The Knights of the Round Table protected and guarded the poor and the weak, they also defended the kingdom from any sudden attack lead by the invaders or any other evil creatures such as dragons, monsters, or even magicians and witches. By the passage of time, many other well-known and noble knights visited Camelot, and several heroic stories were told by famous minstrels in the king’s big hall.
Each year, and at Christmas time, many people came from different small kingdoms and visited Camelot to attend the New Year celebrations. Actually, it was a good opportunity for everybody to eat and drink good food and wine, also to listen to some famous tales told by well-known knights. People celebrated for about twelve days and nights, and each evening Arthur joined his men at the round table to spend some time discussing and laughing.
The following year, on the twelfth day of Christmas celebration and while King Arthur and his knights were discussing at the round table, a strange knight entered the hall, then he got off his horse and stood in front of the round table. Both the knight and his horse were dressed in green, and he was also carrying a huge sharp green axe. Even more strangely both the knight and the horse’s skin were green. Everybody at the Round Table looked at him with astonishment; in fact no one had ever seen such a strange creature! The knight remained silent for a while then he shouted and said that he was looking for Camelot’s king. After a short break, he continued on his speaking and said that no one would reply but only the king.
King Arthur stood up, then he greeted the Green Knight and asked him to take a seat and have some rest. Surprisingly, the strange knight yelled again and said that he was looking for the bravest knight of the Round Table. Immediately, Arthur answered him and said that there were many brave and courageous knights and ready to fight, but it was a time for celebrations not for battles. The Green Knight proudly looked at the knights and laughed, then he raised his green axe high and shouted loudly and asked who would cut off his head with a single blow using his green axe. Everybody remained silent, and no one answered him
