All the knights were amazed as the Green Knight continued laughing loudly. In fact,  no one spoke a word. Then the strange knight laughed louder again and asked if there was a stout-hearted knight who could cut off his head with a single blow. As no one responded, the strange knight screamed and said that there was no fearless knight who could challenge him. Instantly, King Arthur stood up and informed the Green Knight that he accepted to take the challenge and he would cut off his head by himself. The Green knight looked at the knights and continued laughing.  As a consequence, Arthur ordered that strange knight to go in peace and leave the castle immediately and never return, because his challenge was not honourable.

All of a sudden, and while the strange knight was still laughing, Sir Gawain jumped up and then he walked towards the Green Knight and informed him that he accepted that challenge. The Green knight looked at Sir Gawain and told him that he could strike only once, no more. Also, he should not fail to kill him, otherwise, after one year and a day, he would travel to his castle in the north and there he would cut off his head. Sir Gawain replied that he could cut off his head with a single blow, and then he warned the strange knight that he would never strike his own blow because he would die first.

The Green knight advanced , then he gave his heavy green axe to Gawain. Shortly afterwards,  he knelt down on the floor, then he asked Sir Gawain to strike well, because if he failed to kill him, he would die after one year and a day. Then the green knight smiled an evil smile and reminded Gawain not to forget their agreement. Immediately Sir Gawain shouted and said that he was a knight of the Round Table, and he would never break his word. Then he ordered the Green knight to leave as soon as possible otherwise he would cut off his head. The Green knight yelled angrily and ordered him to do it.

A few seconds later, Sir Gawain took the green axe and held it in both hands. Then  he raised it high and with a single blow he cut off the Green Knight’s head and the head rolled onto the floor. Everybody in the big hall was shocked and no one said a single word as the strange knight stood up and picked up his head. Even more strangely, the severed head spoke to Gawain and told him that he should come to the Green Chapel after twelve months and a day. Then the strange knight took  his head and rode out of Camelot.
