The Chapel Perilous was a dangerous place situated in the middle of the dark forest. Sir Meliot’s sister informed Lancelot that no one had been there before and returned alive because in fact it was guarded by ghosts or what seemed to be  'living dead knights'. She also told him that Lady Gilbert used her evil magical powers to control everything there. Sir Lancelot du Lac looked at the lady and smiled. Then he told her that he did not fear any creature on earth. Shortly afterwards, the lady went out with Lancelot and showed him which path he should follow to reach the Chapel Perilous, she also advised him to follow her dog.

Sir Lancelot du Lac walked along the path until he reached the middle of the dark forest. As he advanced a few yards he saw a small chapel surrounded by several tall trees. So he moved towards that small chapel and as soon as he came close he saw an amazing thing: many old shields were hanging on a tall tree just near that small chapel, and even more strangely many knights were standing there and they were wearing old armour and carrying old swords too. The knights did not move, they just turned slowly and looked at Lancelot with empty eyes. Then Lancelot ran towards them and tried to kill them with his sword but he failed; he felt as if he was fighting smoke.

After many unsuccessful attempts to kill the ghosts, he ran towards that chapel , went inside, and  was really amazed by what he saw; the body of a knight was covered with a silk cloth, lying on a large flat stone without any movement. Then he saw strange shadows moving on the walls and the ceiling. So he walked towards that body and as soon as he came close he took his sword and cut a piece of the cloth and held it in his hand. Instantly, the floor began to shake and the stones started to fall from the walls. Then he heard a strange sound, so he ran as quickly as possible to the doorway and went out.

Outside, the ghosts stood in front of the entrance. Then they yelled all together and warned Sir Lancelot not to take that piece of cloth; otherwise he would die.  Again Lancelot swung his sword and tried to kill them but he failed.  Then he looked at the old shields which were hanging on the chains, and with a single blow he cut all the chains and the shields began to fall: each time a shield fell on the ground a knight fell too. As soon as all the knights had fallen onto the ground Sir Lancelot heard a loud scream nearby. He saw Lady Gilbert lying dead on the ground.

When Lancelot returned, he gave that piece of cloth to Sir Meliot’s sister. As soon as the piece of the cloth touched Sir Meliot's wounds he opened his eyes, and looked at his sister and Lancelot. Then he smiled. Later, when he woke up, he informed both his sister and Lancelot that Lady Gilbert’s real name was Hellawes and in fact she was a friend of Morgana the Fay. He also told them that she had cursed another lady who lived just near the dark forest. After they thanked him, Sir Lancelot went out of the house and continued on his way towards Camelot.
