Shortly preceding the departure for Ireland, King Mark advised Tristram to wear the clothes of a minstrel. In addition he ordered two of his servants to take him to King Gurman's court because he was not able to walk. After sailing for several days, the two servants and Tristram reached Ireland. Then they went straight to the Royal Castle. Tristram was an excellent harp player. He could also sing famous, lovely songs as well. When King Gurman heard his songs, he immediately asked him to sing and play the harp in his hall.

On one occasion, King Gurman looked at Tristram’s wounded leg and asked him how he had received his injury. Tristram smiled and said that it was a very long story. Then he carried on narrating his story and informed the king that a few months before,  while he was sailing back to Ireland, a group of pirates  had attacked the boat and killed all the men except him; they took him prisoner because  he had been seriously wounded during the battle. Then Tristram added that the pirates did not kill him because he played the harp and sang very well. As soon as he  had finished telling the story, Queen Isaud told him that she could heal his wounded leg.

The queen took Tristram into a very large room where she asked him to stay for a few days.  During those days, she cared for him until she healed his wounded leg and he felt well. Tristram then decided to stay in Ireland since everybody liked the way he played the harp and sang. Even the king and the queen of Ireland asked him to stay and they also offered him a wonderful large room.

King Gurman and Queen Isaud had only one daughter. Her name was Iseult the Fair and she was the loveliest girl in the whole kingdom.  In time, King Gurman asked Tristram to teach his daughter Iseult to play the harp and sing songs. So, Tristram and the young lady spent a great deal of time together playing the  harp and singing until she became very skilled and brilliant. Meanwhile, the young man quickly fell in love with her but he did not tell anybody about his feelings. One day, he informed the king that it was time for him to return home. He also promised the king that he would visit Ireland again.

When Tristram reached Cornwall, he informed King Mark of everything that had happened in Ireland. Then the wise man looked at King Mark and told him that there was a good way to end the war between the two kingdoms. He suggested that if King Mark married Iseult the Fair he would surely bring peace to Cornwall and Ireland. After a short pause, King Mark replied and said that he had heard about Iseult's beauty because many kings wished to marry her. Then he wondered  if King Gurman and Queen Isaud would agree to give him their daughter's hand in marriage!
