Percivale was a poor young man who looked after the goats of his family. One day he met Sir Lancelot du Lac near a wild roadway. Lancelot looked at him and found that he was a very strong young man and ready to be a squire at the king’s court. So he advised Percivale to visit King Arthur’s castle and inform him that he was sent by Sir Lancelot du Lac. When the young man went home he informed his mother that he had decided to visit Caerleon and become a real knight. His mother looked at her son in a worried face then she warned him not to go to any place; in fact she thought that he was still young and innocent. But Percivale replied helplessly and said that he would not spend all his life time looking after goats.

One evening, and while King Arthur was talking to his foster brother Sir Kay, a powerful knight entered the hall. That knight was wearing red armour and carrying a sharp spear in his hand. Then the Red Knight asked Arthur to give him his golden cup in order to drink to the best knight of the Round Table. Suddenly, and in the twinkling of an eye the knight took the cup, got on his horse and rode away outside the castle. King Arthur quickly stood up then he said loudly that the Red Knight was an unworthy and untrue knight, then he asked who would go and bring  his cup back! All the knights shouted together and said that they would go and follow the Red Knight.

While the knights were arguing and debating , a young man stepped forward and shouted in a brave voice and said that he would go and bring the golden cup! Unexpectedly, Sir Kay laughed loudly and wondered what could a goatherd do against a strong knight, then he continued on laughing. The young man turned towards Sir Kay and said that he was Percivale and he wished to become a real knight. At that time King Arthur looked at Percivale and suggested  that if he could bring back his golden cup, he would accept him as one of the Knights of the Round Table. Shortly after King Arthur gave the young man a horse and asked him to follow the Red Knight.

Percivale got on the horse then rode out of the castle. After a while King Arthur ordered Sir Gawain and Sir Gareth to ride after Percivale. He also asked them to protect the young man from any danger. When Percivale finally saw the Red Knight he advanced towards him as quickly as possible then he asked him to give him back the golden cup. The Red Knight stopped his horse then he pointed his spear and rode straight at Percivale. At that moment, Percivale jumped up from his horse, pulled the Red Knight’s spear from his hand and drove it into the knight’s throat. When the Red Knight fell to the ground, Percivale ran towards him and picked up the golden cup.

Sir Gawain and his companion Sir Gareth watched Percivale as he killed the Red knight. Then the two knights walked towards the young man and thanked him. Later the three men rode back to Caerleon and as soon as they came into King Arthur’s hall, Sir Gawain spoke to King Arthur and informed him how brave and courageous Percivale was. From that day forward, Percivale had been considered as one of the best Knights of the Round Table. Later Sir Lancelot taught him how to use swords, spears, and also axes.
