The imperative in English
The imperative is used to:
- give an order
- give instructions
- make a request
- give advice
1. Form
The imperative uses the base form of the verb (without "to").
>>> Affirmative
- Open the window.
- Sit down.
- Listen carefully.
➡️ The subject "you" is usually omitted.
Not:
❌ You open the window.
✅ Open the window.
2. Negative imperative
Use:
Don't + base verb
- Don't speak so loudly.
- Don't touch that.
- Don't be late.
3. Imperative with "let's"
Use Let's + base verb to make a suggestion including yourself.
- Let's go!
- Let's start the lesson.
- Let's take a break.
Negative form:
- Let's not argue.
4. Polite requests
The imperative can sound strong, so we often add:
- please
- could you...?
- would you...?
Examples:
- Please sit down.
- Please be quiet.
- Could you open the door?
5. Common uses
🔹 Instructions:
- Turn left.
- Mix the ingredients.
- Press this button.
🔹 Advice
- Take an umbrella.
- Try this exercise.
🔹 Warnings
- Be careful!
- Watch out!
6. Important point
The verb "be" keeps the form "be" in the imperative:
- Be nice.
- Be careful.
- Don't be silly.
