    Imperative - English lesson

    The imperative in English

    The imperative is used to:

    - give an order
    - give instructions
    - make a request
    - give advice

    1. Form

The imperative uses the base form of the verb (without "to").

    >>> Affirmative

    - Open the window.
    - Sit down.
    - Listen carefully.

➡️ The subject "you" is usually omitted.

    Not:

    You open the window.
    ✅ Open the window.

    2. Negative imperative

    Use:

    Don't + base verb

    - Don't speak so loudly.
    - Don't touch that.
    - Don't be late.

    3. Imperative with "let's"

Use Let's + base verb to make a suggestion including yourself.

    - Let's go!
    - Let's start the lesson.
    - Let's take a break.

    Negative form:

    - Let's not argue.

    4. Polite requests

The imperative can sound strong, so we often add:

    - please
    - could you...?
    - would you...?

    Examples:

    - Please sit down.
    - Please be quiet.
    - Could you open the door?

    5. Common uses

    🔹 Instructions:

    - Turn left.
    - Mix the ingredients.
    - Press this button.

    6. Important point

The verb "be" keeps the form "be" in the imperative:

    - Be nice.
    - Be careful.
    - Don't be silly.
