    I live in / I live on....
    Message de djibson52 posté le 24-07-2008 à 19:36:36 (S | E | F)

my name's djibril I have a doubt about "I live in" and "I live on". I see that in English,we can say for example " I live in Senegal". but I can't say "I live in Goree" it's a mistake, because Goree is an island. So I notice that when it's about islands or hills we use "on" instead of "in" for example "I live on Goree island". So who can be very grateful to explain the rule to me.
Thanks you a lot we all are here to learn.

You have pretty much stated the rule, just not explicitly.

If we think of ourselves as living on the surface of something, then we use "on".

I wish we could live on the moon!

We think of cities and countries as being surfaces, not having them, so we say "in" to denote the region contained within the borders.
