In order to change this sentence to gerund, I have to write..

Replacing knee surgery that is what I have. <---Is this correct?

    Hello,

Your example is not perfect because people wouldn't express that idea in that way; they would say:
replacing a knee is a serious event

and they use the word 'replacement'

    Hello,

You convert the verb to the gerund - to show it is happening now!

I am having knee replacement surgery.

Sorry but that is not a gerund; see my message below.

    Hello,

Sorry to disagree with you dsmith, but 'I am having knee replacement surgery' is not a gerund. It is a present continuous tense.

A gerund ends with -ing but is a subject or a complement;it does not mean that the action is in progress.
I am having knee replacement surgery = present continuous
Having knee replacement surgery is a major operation = gerund

Here is a sentence with a gerund. I hate being wrong.

    Hello dsmith,

    Yes, that's a gerund
    ...another one:
Being wrong may happen and may be forgiven.
