    Verb tenses/help
    Message from angrepa posted on 16-04-2013 at 01:15:17 (D | E | F)
    Hello,

    in exercise 98938 I wrote:
    19. Ten months HAVE BEEN (and not IS)- the noun phrase is plural, so I donīt understand
    20. Every boy and girl in this class SPEAK (and not SPEAKS) - I used "speak" because every has the meaning of plural.
Could you explain to me why I have made those mistakes?
    Thank you for any help

    Hello,

-19 "When we talk about amounts and quantities we usually use singular verbs, even if the noun is plural".
Ex: ten months IS a long time for him to wait for this job.

-20 "Two nouns qualified by 'each' or 'every', even though connected by 'and', require only a singular verb.
Ex: every boy and girl in this class SPEAKS English.

    Regards.
