    Prepositions /for vs to
    Message from jedi56 posted on 08-11-2013 at 16:16:01 (D | E | F)
    Hello,

Are these sentences right?: 'I have a present for you'; 'She gave it to me'.
If so, why does the first sentence use 'for' and the second one 'to'?
    It is confusing!
    Can anyone help me, please?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

    Your sentences are alright.
I think that "have" is the transitive verb, so it needs direct object. If you want to use two objects after "have", you must use "preposition" to connect 2 objects.
But it is not right for "to give" : Subject + give + indirect object + direct object.
or Subject + give + direct object+ to+ indirect object
