    Sentence /help
    Message from freda23 posted on 26-11-2014 at 09:31:14 (D | E | F)
    Hello,
    Could you help me please?
    Thanks for any reply.

This is the country of the famous "melting pot" with a long history both of conflict between races as well as some success in integrating them.
My question: I can't understand the function of "both of conflict between races as well as some success in integrating them".

    Hello,
    Is this clearer ?
This is the country of the famous "melting pot" with a long history both of conflict between races as well as of some success in integrating them.
The sentence is admittedly redundant, with 'both' and 'as well as' playing more or less the same role, but the meaning is clear, I think - although I don't find it very elegant. Cheers.

    Hi Freda,
Hope you know the meaning of “melting pot” which is used as a metaphor. I am not going much into details but in short it means a fusion of different nationalities and cultures (related to immigrants).
With a long history both of
    1. Conflict between races
As well as= in addition, also
    2. Some success in integrating them.

Salut Hello Freda, I think it should be:
'Despite conflict between Races, there has been some success in integrating them into society.
Does this help you to understand the sentence more?
