Hello,
if you type "for, since, ago" in the yellow window , you will have lots of explanations in French I'm afraid.

To put it in a nutshell:

He bought this car in 2012
He bought this car three years ago (preterite)
He has had this car for three years (present perfect + for + duration)
He has had this car since 2012 (present perfect + since + starting date)
he has been driving this car for three years /since 2012 (present perfect continuous with a verb of action + for or since)
