When you conjugate a verb at a certain tense, you apply that verb to a certain time in the present, or in the past, or in the future, or in an imaginary situation.
    for example:
I am cooking: takes place now.
I cook everyday: it is a habit.
I cooked yesterday, in the past.
I had cooked two days ago, in the past.
I will cook tomorrow, in the future.
I would cook if you asked me, a situation I imagine.
    etc....
