Do: Insistence - Contradiction - Confirmation

DO : insistence? disagreement? confirmation?

You all know the different forms of the auxiliary DO/DOES/DID used to build interrogative and negative clauses. Now, we are going to study DO/DOES/DID, when they're used in AFFIRMATIVE CL
AUSES.

1. DO, the auxiliary, is used to express insistence: it's the emphatic
form.

- Do keep quiet, or get out!
- He does get on my nerves at times!
- You did explain correctly, didn't you?

You will notice that the auxiliary DO, helping the Subject and Verb, follows the imperatives of the person does3 rd person singular) and the tense (Didpreterite).

2. It's also used in order to express a contrast, a disagreement.
- You said I hadn't given an answer, but I did send a text to say I was sick!

3. and also to confirm that what had been planned has happened.
- You were right! He does speak very good English!

4. DO is also used in short answers: the auxiliary thus avoids the repetition of the verb.
- Do you know who arrived first? Peter did! ( = Paul arrived first.)

In the following exercise, your task will be double: first, you'll have to put the right form of DO
and then give the "values" of these expressions

The FORCE is with you !
