“The Straight Story” is a true-life story on Alvin Straight's road journey from Laurens, Iowa, to Mount Zion, Wisconsin, USA. Alvin is and he suffers from hips, but he refuses to have an . He lives with his daughter, Rose, who makes small bird houses. When he learns that his brother Lyle, whom he hasn't seen in many years, has had a stroke he decides to visit him. Unable to drive a car, he goes on the road riding his lawn-mower and towing a trailer. During his journey he encounters many different people. One evening he shares his food with a young woman who has run away from her family. On a different day he is cheered up by a band of cyclists. One night he had to find protection in an abandoned farmhouse. On another occasion he cooked and ate a deer accidentally by a car. It even occurred to him to discuss philosophy with a priest and to sleep in a cemetery. Along the way he encountered many people and approached these experiences with caution and determination. Finally he arrived at his brother's house. Lyle appeared, using a walking-frame, and as they sat together on the porch of the house, pride and relief on Alvin's face signaled the end of that trip.
