    Vocabulary: body language and gestures

When we're in a conversation, facing our interlocutor, it may not be useful to speak (, which is quite the limit when you're supposed to teach a language  ... ) Funny faces, mimicking or some attitudes often betray our thoughts and are most often universally understood.

Today, we're going to show and name this "body language" which is so useful to communication between human beings.

    I) We speak with our eyes...

It's often said that our eyes are"the mirror of our soul", or "the window to our soul". They betray our emotions, our feelings. Yet, this proverb is quite disputed, but remains a wonderful image.

                 Eyes wide open

                     = surprise!

                             To wink

                 = shutting one eye.

                                To smile

              Eyes and mouth open

                 = horror, fright

                        To frown

                            To laugh

                         To blink

                   = shutting both eyes

                         To make faces

                            To grin

       = smiling (showing your teeth)

II) Thanks to our mouth, without uttering one sound, we talk too.

              To pull one's tongue

      To clench one's teeth

     To hush= Keep quiet !

III) Fingers (hands, arms) are very expressive too. They obey universal codes.

                    To applaud

          = Congratulations!

         Thumbs down= disapproval

           To shrug one's shoulders

         = ignorance or insolence

                       To clench one's fist

                      = Determination.

                           Thumbs up

                     = Congratulations!

                             Victory!

                        To point (at)

                To raise one's hand

                   = desire to speak

                     To wave

Helped by a situation, we'll need to interpret all these signs in the right way. The circumstances will help you not to make mistakes.

    Good luck for the test!
