In Lyon, the Festival of Lights has now became a media event, but its origins go back to the Renaissance. Indeed, at that time, a plague epidemic was eating away at the South of France and was progressively moving northwards. During this dark periode, the people of Lyon decided in 1643 to place themselves under the protection of the Virgin Marie and they vowed to renew this pigrimage every year if Lyon was spared. As the epidemic ceased on the outskirts of the city, the people keept their promise and paid hommage to the Virgin every year.
Initially schedule for 8 September 1852, the inauguration of the statue of the Golden Virgin on the old Fourvičre chapel was postponed to 8 December because of a floud of the Saône. But that day, it rained poured down and threatned the planned illuminations. In the evening, the sky cleared up and the people of Lyon spontanously placed luminous lights on the edge of their windows.
    The Illuminations festival was born!
This tradition remain and every 8 December, the inhabitants of Lyon light up their windows and go out in the streets to admire their city thus adorned.
