    I) POSSESSION:

    General rule: Tom 's dog

    - also with a proper noun:  James's hat
    - also with a compound noun:  my brother-in-law
    's bike 
    - also with a plural noun:  the children's toys  

    - BUT not with a plural noun ending in "s": my parents' house



    II) TO SHOW LETTERS HAVE BEEN OMITTED:
    - contractions: don't (do not)   /   it's (it is)   /   he'll (he will)

    - Rhythm 'n' Blues   (Rhythm  and Blues)

    - Toys 'r ' us             (Toys are us)

    - fo ''s' le                (fo 'c' sle / forecastle)

    - o'clock                     (of the clock)



    III)  LENGTHS, DISTANCES, YEARS:
    - a minute's silence
