    Cardinal and ordinal numbers

    Cardinal numbers tell quantities. Ordinal numbers tell the rank of something.

    Example :

    Four  presidents were elected in the USA before 1817. The first president was George Washington.

    'Four' is a cardinal number.

    'The first' is an ordinal number.

     

    ➡️ I)  Cardinal numbers:


    If you need some help to write numbers: ' loading='lazy'>

     
    Hundred, thousand, million, billion ... don't change when there is a number before.
    They are in the plural form when they are used with a noun and "of".


    Three thousand people. 

     Thousands of people. 


    How to pronounce special numbers:

    1.754 = one point seven five four.

    5,353.5 = five thousand three hundred and fifty-three point five.



     0 is read 'nought' OR 'zero' :

             0.02 = nought point nought two ou zero point zero two


    1a/ How to read the zero:

    Measures: 3 degrees above zero. 

    Phone numbers, room numbers, dates: use the letter 'O'.


    1b/ Percentages :

      

    25% = twenty-five per cent.

     100% = a hundred per cent.

    200% = two hundred per cent.

    3.75% = three point seven five per cent.


    1c/ Years:


             1945 = nineteen forty-five.

    2010 = two thousand and ten/twenty ten

    10th tenth

    100th hundredth

    2ndsecond

    12th  twelfth

    3rd third

    13th thirteenth

    The first time. 




    ➡️ III) Fractions:

    1/5 = one fifth

    2/3 = two thirds


    1/25 = one twenty-fifth      

    Caution:  1/2 = one/a half  and 1/4 = one/a quarter



    ➡️ IV) Dates:

    Several ways to write them:

      14 July 1789; July 14th 1789; 14th July 1789; July 14, 1789.

    How to pronounce:

    -         The fourteenth of July, seventeen eighty-nine.

    -          July the fourteenth, seventeen eighty-nine.
