James Cook : the life of an explorer

James Cook : the life of an explorer

James Cook was born in Yorkshire (England) in 1728.His father was a poor farmer with seven children.

Cook loved the sea and he joined the Royal Navy in 1755.

He became an excellent sailor and gained a reputation for charting maps.

In 1768, he was chosen to lead an expedition to the Pacific. Officially he was supposed to calculate the distance from the Earth to the sun by observing Venus from Tahiti. In fact, the English government wanted to find and conquer new lands south of Australia. Cook left for Tahiti on his ship called The Endeavour.

On his first expedition (1768-1771), he mapped New Zealand and explored the east coast of Australia. On his second expedition (1772-1775), he reached Antarctica. On his last expedition (1776-1779), he went to Canada, Alaska and the Pacific.

On February 14, 1779 he was stabbed and drowned by a group of natives in Hawaii. By the 19th century, Britain was the biggest commercial, industrial and naval power in the world with colonies on every continent.
