If the "auxiliaire" DO is used in the past : DID, there are no doubts, you deal with a preterit question. For example :
- Did you go out last night ?

Allow me to correct you :

YOUR question must be in the present. (present and preterite are tenses, not sentences)
Now for the answer :
Bursa is right, it's the auxilary verb that shows it; except if the verb is TO BE. Then, as it doesn't need an auxilary verb, there is WAS or WERE before the subject. Do you want an example ?
- Where WERE you yesterday ? - I WAS at the cinema.
- What film DID you see ? - I saw 'Gone with the Wind'.
