    Hello,
I'm searching for the translation of " I was to have hundreds more before I reached the end". Why "I was to..."
    I thank you very much.

    Hello

The writer says for example: "I had a big problem in Calcutta. I was to have hundreds more before I reached the end" He is now back in France and reflects back on his experience and in a way forecasts what was to happen to him, what he now knows happened to him.
In French, it is an aspect of the verb devoir :
Lincoln was shot in the head in a theater, he was to die a few hours later. il devait mourir quelques heures plus tard.
So, your translation should be :
Je devais en avoir des centaines d'autres avant d'arriver au bout. Constat à postériori.

I thank you very much. Now I understand because I've got several sentences like this one.
