    Possessive pronouns/help
    Message from eurovisiongirl posted on 31-03-2018 at 15:41:08 (D | E | F)
    Hello,
Help me please to understand this sentence and the usage of possessive pronoun in it.
Sentence:"I don't know about you but I've always been jealous of those people who party all year round, then the night before the exam flick through my course book (THEIRS is empty because they didn't go to any lectures).
Why did we use the form "is" after pronoun "theirs" which is used for plurals?
    Thank you for your replies.

    Hi there,
(THEIRS is empty because they didn't go to any lectures)
Let's replace in your text the possessive adjective "their" with the possessive pronoun "theirs" :
...my course book their course book is empty because they didn't go to any lectures .
So the pronoun "theirs" is used to avoid the repetition of "course book" twice .
    And here's a useful link :

    Hello!
Theirs is used to avoid the repetition. It's a possessive pronoun.
Ex: My car is black.Theirs is red
Ma voiture est noire.La leur est rouge
Their car is red.Mine is black
Leur voiture est rouge la mienne est noire
