How to use the word ' could '

I just want to know how to use " could" i am making a lot of mistakes while I use this.
"could" can use in two ways
1. we can use " could " to show more politeness than "would"
2. we can use this as a past form of "can"
But I have seen this using several places so it would help us a lot if anybody describe of it by a example
