(3) Andrew
forced to abandon golf plan at Windsor
|

Another member of the Royal Family forced
on the defensive this week has been Prince Andrew, the Duke of York,
who had planned to open an exclusive golf club at Windsor Castle. The
TIMES reported on Friday that the idea has now been 'bunkered' by the
embarrassment caused by the Countess of Wessex's business dealings,
and that Buckingham Palace has quietly dropped the plan - which was
to have been overseen by Nick Faldo. The proposal - involving a much
enlarged course very close to the Queen's private rooms - 'would have
involved the Duke playing a round of golf with celebrities and wealthy
businessmen to generate income when he leaves the Royal Navy in the
summer,' the paper says. Alas, a Buckingham Palace spokesman now states:
'The golf club scheme is no longer being given active consideration.'
The paper notes: 'The prospect of a commercial venture within the grounds
of a royal residence was regarded by the Queen's senior advisers as
a commercial venture too far in the current climate.' The tabloid SUNDAY
PEOPLE is more openly critical of Prince Andrew's 'playboy' lifestyle,
which it claims is irritating Prince Charles. The Prince of Wales, the
paper claims, is 'making astonishing moves to block brother Andrew's
new job as a roving trade envoy' because he believes Andrew 'simply
can't be trusted not to disgrace himself'. Andrew has been photographed
in a number of tabloids recently enjoying the company of a group of
attractive young women. When he leaves the Royal navy in July, the Duke
of York is due to take on the role of unpaid ambassador promoting British
trade abroad. The paper quotes an unnamed Palace source as saying: 'The
Prince of Wales is extremely concerned about Andrew's playboy image.
He thinks he won't be able to resist the temptation of mixing business
with pleasure. This is a high-profile appointment which demands tact
and discretion...The prospect of Andrew being photographed on a yacht
with a bevy of topless beauties when he should be representing British
trade at taxpayers' expense makes Charles extremely nervous.' |
