Sarah, Duchess of York believes that the Queen
is the 'best granny in the world'. In an interview published by the
SUNDAY TELEGRAPH for UK Mother's Day, and followed up on March 30, the
Duchess gives an intimate insight into her relationship with her daughters
and other members of the Royal Family. She describes the Queen as her
'icon', and, in a sometimes tearful interview, states: 'I look up to
her. I think she's the finest woman I know. HM [Her Majesty] has got
a wonderful sense of humour. She loves to sing. She is the widest-read
woman in the world and yet she has this wonderful compassion and total
and utter understanding. She is very forgiving. She doesn't poke her
nose in. She lets you have a free rein, but doesn't miss a trick.' Sarah
rejects the idea of the Queen (whom she refers to as 'The Boss') as
being cold and aloof. 'If we're voting for the best granny in the world,
I have to tell you the Boss is the best granny,' she continues. The
praise - unusual from one who has so frequently spoken of the pain that
the Royal Family caused her - continues to an extent that might embarrass
even a tabloid editor: 'I had the best mother-in-law,' the Duchess states.
'I always send her something on Mothering Sunday - a card and a little
bunch of flowers. I love her to bits.' She is less happy about her father-in-law,
Prince Philip, however. His 'cruel comments' that she was 'odd and pointless'
left her feeling worthless and devastated. She tells how his insistence
that she be banished from the annual Royal Family Christmas lunch betrayed
an attitude 'so bad that I believed I was this worthless human being'.
Commenting on her interview, the tabloid DAILY EXPRESS reminds its readers
that 'the Duke of Edinburgh blames the Duchess for bringing shame on
the Monarchy with a series of gaffes including her toe-sucking antics
with Texan millionaire John Bryan'.
