    Modals: should, would, could


    Should  would could are modals,  therefore they are followed by the base form of the verb .

    Should conveys an idea of  advice, reproach, supposition  . You can also find it  after  impersonal  phrases  like :  it is necessary that , it is possible, advisable etc.

    Should can also  start an affirmative sentence instead of “ in case..”

     

    Would  is used to form the conditional, to describe a past habit and  in the ' future in the past 'construction.

     

    Could  denotes possibility, past capability. In the interrogative it is used for formal requests.
