Infinitive in sentences - English lesson
The infinitive
🔹 I) Infinitive with "to":
✔️ With wishes, hopes, expectations (want, hope, prefer, would like, expect, wish, manage):
- She would like to meet foreign people.
- She hopes to see the Prime Minister.
- We prefer to drive you there.
🔹 II) Infinitive with a subject:
✔️ To show who will do the action: expect, advise, teach, tell, ask, want, etc.
- Peter wants his daughter to marry Mike.
- We expect her to come back.
- The nurse told her to be patient.
🔹 III) for + noun / pronoun + infinitive:
✔️ After the preposition "for". With a subject.
'This suitcase is too heavy for you to be pulled. You had better take a taxi! - - The hotel is not very far for me to walk.
- - It's time for you to get there.
- - It's time for me to rest!
🔹 IV) Infinitive without "to":
✔️ With the verbs "make" and "let":
- The teacher made him revise.
- Bill didn't let him drive.
🔹 V) see / hear + infinitive :
✔️ With a full action. Use the -ING form if the action is being done.When we passed her bedroom door we heard the little girl crying.
- We saw her cry.
- We heard him shout at her.
🔹 VI) had better / would rather :
✔️ Infinitive without "to".
Negation : You had better not answer her.
- She had better go to bed now.
- She would rather watch TV (than go to bed).
