    Vocabulary: a wedding

First, there is the marriage proposal  (to propose)... It can be very romantic, full of emotionstraditional or, on the contrary eccentric, unexpected, funny...

Knee down...dropdown on one knee...   ... or write it on the sand... written on the sand...       ... or say it with the pizza... on the pizza box...

Then, get ready for D-day (Your Big Day): first, choose your invitations, and have them printed (or make them yourselves if you want them unique)...

Wedding invitations have changed a lot for a few decades... In the past, parents used to invite guests... nowadays, the Bride and Groom do, and they choose the style and atmosphere of their wedding... (but most of the time, their parents still pay the bill... )

If you're French and send a 'fairepart', which is purely formal, to inform your friends about the change of your status, Anglo-Saxons may take it for an invitation ... Thus, you'll have guests you'll have to take care of (especially as they come from a distance) without really wishing it...

Then, the preparations will have to start... You will need help...  A wedding- planner may be hired for big weddings. If not, the couple will have to choose:

Choosing a dress/gown                 for the bride     Choosing a suit, or a tuxedo            for the (bride)groom.

Choosing a maid of Honour  among the whole group of bridesmaids, and a Best man for the groom.

The maid of honour (MOH) will have a lot to plan and to do... Most of the time, she is the bride's best friend (or sister...). She is in charge of every detail, and must be a 'moral support' calming the bride's nerves...

She won't forget to provide the bride with "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue".

The best man will plan and organise the groom's 'stag night' in the United Kingdom, or 'bachelor-party' in the US, (whereas the MOH will most certainly deal with the "bachelorette-party" or 'Bride Shower". The best man will have to make a speech at the beginning of the reception.

Of course, the consents are exchanged.

The original words of consent were: "I take you, to be my (husband/wife). I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honour you all the days of my life."

Then the couple answers the traditional question: "Will you take ___ as your lawful wedded husband/wife?"  "I will."

These words are now often replaced by marriage vows written by the bride and groom themselves in order to make their committment more personal. These words end on a permission to kiss the bride...

At the end of the ceremony,  confetti, or white seeds are often thrown at the newlyweds as they leave the ceremony to symbolize fertility.  Bubbles are also often used to surround the couple.

The wedding-car (bride and maid of honour)

The bride's bouquet                  The wedding ceremony.

The wedding rings                          The wedding reception                    The wedding cake.

Figurines of bride and groom.           The first danse as husband and wife           The young couple are leaving the party

In Great Britain, a small piece of the wedding cake is sent to the relatives who couldn't attend the ceremony.

The bride will throw her bouquet at the reception and all single women present will compete in catching it. The woman who catches the bouquet is said to be the following one who will marry.

The newly married couple will leave the party in a getaway car decorated in a funny way by friends and guests...

                                                               They lived happily ever after...
