Vocabulary: the different ages of Man

FROM THE BABY to the OLD MAN...

What is the most important age in life? What stage of life is the fundamental one, the one you shouldn't fail, the one which will determine your life forever?  Infancy, when everything still seems to be possible, or almost? Adolescence when every certainty is re-evaluated, chosen, shaped... The adult age when physical and intellectual fullness seem to have been reached. Or is it Maturity or even old age bringing wisdom and serenity?  It all depends on individuals, on the "accidents of life" people have met, of circumstances too, but what is obvious is that you have to live every moment of your life to the full, taking advantage of any little happy moment of the present, while going on preparing for the future... CARPE DIEM... SEIZE THE DAY...

    1) From BIRTH to around 11 or 12 years old: INFANCY, then CHILDHOOD:

                     A newborn           An infant            Toddlers
              MULTIPLE BIRTHS

                      Twins          Triplets          Quintuplets

Little girls          Growth curves          Little boys

     Infancy= from birth to 3 years old; Childhood= between 10 and 12.

    2) A DIFFICULT AGE TO BE: from 10 to 20...

That is the moment of all temptations, all the experiments, including the most dangerous ones... it is the age of doubt, but of all certitudes too... It is an age when you try to find solutions and answers, of sufferings, silences, complicity; it's a moment where emotional balance is threatened, when young people experience both repulsion and passions...

                         Pre-Adolescence                 Teenagers

                           Young woman                  Young man

3 ADULTHOOD  and maturity...: a kind of new balance "chosen" by the individual, taking his convictions, his passions into account...  "Balance" is made of "responsibility" and reflexions about the meaning of life, what you intend to do with it, and made of tremendous temptations too...

           A  middle-aged woman

and a Head of State...      A  middle-aged manand another Head of State...

How can you tell someone's age politely?

    in her thirties= she's between 30 and 39...

You can be more precise... in his early forties (41-42- 43), in her mid-fifties (= middle fifties) = (55-56-57), in his late seventies (78-79).

    -  She's in her late teens, early twenties. (= 18 or 19. perhaps 20 or 21)

Remember: to be an age: How old are you?; a difficult age to be.

    4) Senior citizens and (... much later) old age...: this is the age of experience, of expertise which must be renewed and up-dated continuously, and then, maybe, at the end of it, you may find serenity and wisdom...

Still very active ...                 and cheerful ...
Living to a very old age ...   ... but ageing together...
