    Vocabulary: fly away...

For some people, "travelling by plane" or "taking the plane" is a usual habit, almost a daily one, sometimes...   On the contrary, for others, the universe of an airport is quite unknown...

Anyway, this universe is very complex and increasigly becoming so, because of the terrible events which happened lately in the whole world.

In English, the expression: "I'll take the plane" can be used, but it is much more usual to use an expression  representing many people's oldest dream: I'll fly!

    Let's fly together ...

         Departures= Planes leaving the airport
                            An airport
Arrivals= Planes coming to the airport

           To take-off/ a take-off

A runway is used to take-off

or bring passengers back to an airport.

                                    To land

          The  First class     The Business-class

                     Economy/ Coach

                = the Economy class

What must you do before flying?

                     To  check-in

                   Get your Boarding pass

                     Security checks

Of course, before boarding, you will not forget to pay a visit to the different "duty-free shops".

The people you'll meet or fly with:

     Air-traffic controllers

            A baggage handler

         An Immigration Officer

                           The crew

       The captain/pilot

      Flight attendants

    = Hostesses and Stewards

Here we are: READY to go, at last :

            Passengers are boarding

                    The overhead compartment

                            A tray-table

                Fasten your beatbelt

Here is an extremely strange show: seeing this tiny lorry (truck) getting the huge monster out of its gate. This is "towing"

or "push-back". Then, the plane will go and position itself in front of the runway getting ready to take off (it advances very slowly= "taxiing")

You may follow the flight on the Internet: Flight status :

     On the way   = Departed
     On time  = not late
Delayed = will be late   Cancelled = called-off
     Arrived / Landed  = Arrived
     at the airport

    More vocabulary :

     A one-way ticket  = "a single trip"  A return ticket  = "a round trip"
     A journey = un voyage A passenger = a traveller
     A carry-on  = a cabin luggage
An over-sized luggage   = very big cases
An over-weight case  = a very heavy case   A control tower to check the planes
     A domestic flight = a national flight  A long-haul flight = an international flight
An aisle seat = a seat near the walkway
A window seat = seat near the window .
To schedule = to plan A reward
= sthg given to acknowledge merit

    After the flight:

              Baggage reclaim

A customs officer and a sniffer dog

                      Home at last!

Phew...   That's a lot of technical vocabulary ... at least for people who aren't used to flying or going to airports...

On the contrary, this is very current and usual vocabulary for "frequent fliers".

The following test won't be difficult... Yet, I advise you to take a pause, and save, because it's quite long! I'm sure you'll do great... and it's a true story !

Oh yes, it was quite a smooth, but unforgettable .
I had arrived very early as promised to be drastic and thorough.
There was already a long line for but as they opened many counters, it wasn't that bad... and I quickly got my : seat 2 H.
I just had to take with me into the cabin. I hate oversized and overweight especially as when I go to my son's, doubles of my things are expecting me there... Yet, I'll pay a visit to the to buy some of my favourite perfume! I had a seat in and I liked it a lot, in the second row. Very comfortable!
spoke to us: our flight from ORD to CDG (Chicago to Paris) was on time. Our seat belts were fastened and checked and we .
Then the whole flight was a procession of attentive , except during the break for the video and the necessary nap. The crew were very thoughtful, eager to help and make the pleasant. When we , as predicted, I had to go through the customs like everyone. No dogs for me... No either...
Yet, I could have declared an unexpected present...
The crew had distinguished me as 'the most pleasant and friendly ' of that flight, and I had been offered a very refined bottle of a very good (American) wine as a reward! I was flabbergasted and grateful... I'll never know what I had done (or not done!) to deserve that!
Unbelievable, isn't it? I love flying!
