    Playing golf

The  ancient origins of the game are unclear and much debated. From Rome, China or Holland, all people over the centuries have had games in which participants used a stick to hit a ball.

For us, golf is a very old Scottish game. Golf was invented by a shepherd in Scotland, about 400 years ago. He took his stick in both hands and hit a round stone, sending it a long way away. That was how the basic principle of golf was invented!

Officially, golf began in Scotland on May 14, 1754. On that day, a group of friends decided to write down the rules of their favourite game. The oldest club in the world, the Royal and Ancient Club in St Andrews, dates from 1754.

Golf is good for your health. When playing golf, you walk for hours in the open air in a beautiful natural environment, with trees and water all around.

You also develop a lot of qualities : patience, self-discipline, concentration, technicality, self-control and will-power.

The golf course and the basic rules are simple. Normally it is played on a golf course of eighteen holes. Some courses have only nine, but cannot be used for big competitions. With your club ( the stick) you have to hit the ball and put it into the holes counting the fewest possible points. You count one point each time you hit the ball, or when you play a second ball because you have lost the first one, or because you have had to move the ball with your hand before playing it again.

Golf has become a means for the tourist industry to attract clients who want to relax while taking some physical activity.

There are two basic forms of golf play : match play and stroke play. Stroke play is more popular.

Golf events were held at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 and Saint Louis in 1904, then this sport disappeared for 112 years before returning to the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

Currently, few women practice golf in competition. Maybe in the future, ladies will surprise us on the green.
