Present simple
Simple present tense is used for an action that often happens in a specific time.
For example, He comes here every day. Because the action of coming is repeated every day, we use simple present tense.
Second example, He smokes his cigarette. In this sentence smoking is a habit therefore we use simple present tense.
Basically, simple present tense is used:
1 – to show the custom or a habit. (She goes to bed at 9 p.m. every night).
2 – To express a permanent fact (The Earth goes round the sun ).
3 – After some words like when, whenever, as soon as, as, before, till, until, while, directly, since, where, unless and in case if the action will happen in the future. (John will get married as soon as he finds a job.)
4 – For an action that will happen in the future if the occurrence of action is very close or if the decision for that action has been already made. (The classes begin in September 2020).
Affirmative form: Subject + verb (infinitive) I go, you go, he/she/it goes, we go, you go, they go.
Negative form: Subject + auxiliary verb (do) + not + main verb (infinitive). I don't go, you don't go, he/she/ it doesn't go, we don't go, you don't go,they don't go. (Don't go or do not go/ doesn't go or does not go)
Interrogative form: Auxiliary verb (Do) + subject + main verb (infinitive). Do I go? Do you go? Does he/she/it go? Do we go? Do you go? Do they go?
Important notice (Exception) some verbs like be, have, can and must don't follow the above rules. They don't take auxiliary verbs (do) in the negative and interrogative forms.
Exercise: complete the sentences.
