    In the past, fashion was dictated by the royal cour. Thus, men and women were subject to the liws of etiquette and prisonners of a system that left little room for personel fantasy. However, in the 18th century, a change in consumption paterns took place. Shops evolved and the first luxury stores appared.
    After the First World War, fashion was dominat by Parisian designers.
    For many years, France has been recognised as one of the most artistic countries. Fashion, and more particulary Haute Couture, became the order of the day in the Paris of the Belle Époque. The favorite walk was to show off, or to admire those who showed off. Walking up the Champs-Élysées was essentiel for any Parisian concerned about his social image.
