The Louvre is the largest museum in the world, ahead of the Hermitage in Russia and the National Museum of China in Beijing, with 243, 000 m2 of which 73, 000 m2 are exhibition rooms with 14. 5 km of coridors. It is located in the heart of Paris, near the right bank of the Seine.
The history of the Louvre begans in the Middle Ages, under the reign of Philip Augustus in 1190. Fearing English invasions, the king decided to build a fortified wall around Paris and to protect the west of the city with a garnison fortress called the Louvre. This medieval tower is the symbole of royal power. As the capital grew beyond the walls, Charles V built a new rempart including the sububs. As a result, the Louvre became a strategic place for the power of the king, who was the first to make it his main residence. The Louvre then had a dual fonction : a protective role and the residence of the king and his court.
In 1546, François I commissioned the architect Pierre Lescot to build a new Louvre palace. Over the folowing years, the Louvre was developped and then abandoned.
After the Revolution of 1789, the Louvre palace was transformed into a museum and consists of a group of buildings. By decree in 1791, it became the ' Central Museum of the Arts of the Republic ' .
It was inaugurated at the end of the 20th century as the ' Musée du Louvre ' .
