Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its magnificent medieval monuments connected by contless canals.
Venice is a city built on water. Built on untable islands in the centre of a lagoon, it is now in danger of sinking under the water.
1600 years ago, there was only a marhy lagoon. It was a patchwork of about 100 islands connected by 400 bridges and about 50 km of canals.
A lagoon is formed when large rivers flow into the sea. This one was born millions of years ago when the major rivers Po and Piave joined the Adriatic Sea and dumped tons of sediment into the water. Over the milennia, the sediment accumulated and hundreds of marshy islands were formed. There are plants that decompose and crete an organic material called peat. How could a city be created on such fragile ground?
The Venetians cut tree truncs from the forests and drove them into the peat to renforce the banks. Under the Basilica in St Mark ' s Square, hundreds of wooden piles are driven into the mudy, waterlogged ground. Planted in tight rows at 15 cm intervales, they form a solid foundation. Wooden planks and limestone blocks are then placed on piles to build monuments on several levels. These millions of piles have stand the test of time and proved the effectiveness of the system. They have transformed swamps into stable enough ground to support thousands of houses, churches and monuments.
