If Paris is full of unusual places, including the covered passages mentioned in a previous dictation, Lyon has traboules, which means that typicaly Lyonnais term constitute the identity and reputation of the city.
This word comes from the Latin ' transambulare ' which means to walk, to pass through. A traboule is therefore a covered passageway, reserved for pedestriens, which allows them to move from one street to another by passing underneath houses, through courtyards and stairways. It is not unusual for the word traboule to be associate with the word cours, as the two terms are often linked to evoke a route. The first traboules apeared in the 4th century and were used by the inhabitants to get water and were built perpendicular to the Saône, but others date from the Renaissance. Thanks to their usefulnes in the daily life of the people of Lyon, the traboules have become a characteristic feature of Lyon ' s urban planning over the years and serve interior courtyards that are often very beautiful.
In the 19th century, trade, particulary in textiles, required rapid and seltered travel between production sites and sales and delivery points. Thus, they alowed the silk manufacturers to move the silk rols without damaging them by rain or snow.
